“I have worked as a live sketch artist from my junior year in high school until now, painting watercolor portraits at public markets, craft fairs, art festivals, and children’s birthday parties.
My favorite parts of sketching are the conversations I have with my models. Talking with an older man about the bikes he builds for elementary schools, a college graduate about her coding website, or a little girl about her own interest in drawing people, is like opening doors to other worlds. Through my watercolors, I have connected with people from all backgrounds. I have shown people beauty in the blemishes, wrinkles, and scars where they once saw imperfections, and I realized that the more I got to know them, the more I could capture their essence—who they are. Live sketching has made me view my art as a gift that can show people their beauty in spite of their insecurities, make people smile, and provide human connection in a disconnected world.”
